Albania, 1953 — dissident coup conspiracy
Event Summary
The dataset records an event coded as a foreign-backed dissident coup conspiracy in Albania on 30 December 1953, corresponding to the final collapse of Operation Valuable, the joint CIA and MI6 covert operation to overthrow Enver Hoxha's communist regime. Between 1949 and 1953 the Western services, with French and other allied involvement, recruited anti-communist Albanian emigres, trained them in Malta, Italy, and West Germany, and infiltrated them into Albania by sea, air, and land to gather intelligence, conduct sabotage, and incite an internal uprising against Hoxha. The operation failed almost completely: Hoxha's Sigurimi security service, aided by advance intelligence, captured or killed most of the agents and used their family connections for collective punishment.
By late 1953 both services agreed to wind the operation down, the CIA recognized it was blown in October 1953, and it was officially unmasked in December 1953. The coded 30 December 1953 date matches this foreign-backed subversion campaign at the point of its collapse.

Cross-Reference
Only one dataset carries it. One of the three reference datasets we check against carries this event; the others do not list it. That is not a contradiction — the datasets cover different periods and use different thresholds — but it means the record has had less outside corroboration.

Outcome and Target
Coup Atlas research identifies the target as: Enver Hoxha's regime defeated the Western subversion campaign and he ruled until his death in 1985.
Baseline coding: Plot discovered and disrupted before execution. Recorded leader fate: remained in office; not physically harmed. The baseline file does not name individual targets; researched names are kept in a separate layer.
