Argentina, 1955 — military coup attempt

Argentina (ARG)South America, AmericasJune 16, 1955

Event Summary

On 16 June 1955 about 30 aircraft of the Argentine Navy and Air Force bombed and strafed the Plaza de Mayo in central Buenos Aires as the first step of a failed coup against President Juan Domingo Peron, striking the adjacent Casa Rosada while a large crowd demonstrated in support of the president. Amid a bitter conflict between Peron and the Catholic Church, rebel officers aimed to kill Peron and ignite a wider uprising, but the army did not join and the ground assault lost momentum through the afternoon. Loyalist forces prevailed, one loyal fighter scored the Argentine Air Force's first air to air kill, and the surviving rebel pilots fled to Uruguay to seek asylum.

Between roughly 150 and over 300 people, mostly civilians, were killed in the largest aerial bombing ever on the Argentine mainland. Peron survived, but the assault presaged the successful Revolucion Libertadora that deposed him in September 1955.
