Argentina, 1962 — dissident coup conspiracy
Event Summary
This entry is coded 23 November 1962, during the Azules versus Colorados conflict that split the Argentine armed forces under the de facto presidency of Jose Maria Guido. After the March 1962 overthrow of President Arturo Frondizi, the officer corps divided between the Azules, largely army officers led by General Juan Carlos Ongania who favored limited Peronist participation and a constitutional transfer of power, and the Colorados, drawing on navy and air force ranks, who equated Peronism with communism and wanted a hardline military dictatorship. The two factions fought a first armed clash from 16 to 20 September 1962, in which the Azules prevailed and Guido allied himself with Ongania.
The November 1962 coding sits between that first clash and the second, larger confrontation of 2 to 5 April 1963, in a period of continuous factional maneuvering and plotting over the future direction of the military and the promised return to elections.

Cross-Reference
Only one dataset carries it. One of the three reference datasets we check against carries this event; the others do not list it. That is not a contradiction — the datasets cover different periods and use different thresholds — but it means the record has had less outside corroboration.

Outcome and Target
Coup Atlas research identifies the target as: Guido remained the de facto president throughout; the Azules faction prevailed and elections proceeded in July 1963.
Baseline coding: Plot discovered and disrupted before execution. Recorded leader fate: remained in office; not physically harmed. The baseline file does not name individual targets; researched names are kept in a separate layer.
