Burkina Faso, 1987 — military coup

Burkina Faso (BFA)West Africa, AfricaOctober 15, 1987

Event Summary

On October 15, 1987 Captain Blaise Compaore led a violent coup in Burkina Faso that overthrew and killed President Thomas Sankara, his former friend and comrade from the 1983 revolution, ending Sankara's radical Marxist government. The two men had led the August 1983 coup together, but by 1987 bitter disputes over the direction of the revolution had divided them. On October 15, 1987 an armed group killed Sankara along with twelve other officials in a gun battle at the presidential palace in Ouagadougou.

Compaore immediately assumed the presidency, launching a policy of rectification that reversed Sankara's leftist policies. Sankara's body was dismembered and buried in an unmarked grave, and the government initially claimed he had died of natural causes. In 2022 a military court convicted Compaore in absentia of complicity in Sankara's assassination.

Compaore described the killing of Sankara as an accident but the circumstances have never been properly investigated, Sankara's body was dismembered and he was buried in an unmarked grave, and in 1987 the government had claimed Sankara died of natural causes, though a 2015 autopsy revealed his body was riddled with more than a dozen bullets.

In April 2021 a military court in Burkina Faso indicted Compaore in absentia, charging him with the 1987 murder of his immediate predecessor Thomas Sankara, and in April 2022 he was found guilty on all charges and sentenced to life in prison, while remaining in Ivory Coast as a political refugee.

Editorial Note

Killings protocol applied: the deposed leader, President Thomas Sankara, was killed on October 15, 1987, shot by an armed group along with twelve other officials at the presidential palace; every claim about the killing is cited and attributed. Conflicting and contested accounts recorded: the exact circumstances have long been disputed, Compaore initially called the death an accident and the government first claimed natural causes, while a 2015 autopsy found the body riddled with more than a dozen bullets; these conflicting official and forensic accounts are recorded rather than resolved. Accountability recorded: a Burkinabe military court convicted Compaore in absentia of complicity in the assassination in April 2022, a fact recorded per its source. Fate coding: killed, matching the dataset. Coding note: the dataset labels this a military coup, accurately; Compaore, Sankara's own deputy and co-leader of the 1983 revolution, organized it and took power. Arc link: this ties directly to the August 4, 1983 coup (enriched in batch 36) in which Compaore installed Sankara; the two former allies fell out over the revolution's direction. Aftermath recorded neutrally: Compaore reversed Sankara's leftist policies under a rectification program and ruled until the 2014 uprising, later context.
