Congo, 1977 — dissident coup attempt

Congo (COG)Central Africa, AfricaMarch 18, 1977

Event Summary

Ngouabi, who had ruled since 1969 and had declared the country Africa's first Marxist Leninist state, was shot dead at around 2:30 in the afternoon by a suicide commando, an attack later attributed to a group led by Barthelemy Kikadidi. The killing did not, however, bring the plotters to power; instead the army closed ranks and a Military Committee of the Congolese Workers' Party took control, and in the reprisals that followed several figures were implicated and executed, including, controversially, the former president Alphonse Massamba-Debat, who was tried and shot, and Cardinal Emile Biayenda, who was abducted and murdered days after Ngouabi's death. Colonel Joachim Yhombi Opango emerged as the new head of state, continuing the pattern of violent power struggles in Congolese politics.

Editorial Note

Date match to the 18 March 1977 assassination of Ngouabi. Dataset codes it a dissident coup with leader fate killed, accurate: Ngouabi was assassinated, though the plotters did not seize power and a military committee took over. Well documented. Continues the Congo Brazzaville run, following the 1966, 1972, and 1975 records; Massamba-Debat, executed in the reprisals, appeared as leader in earlier Congo entries.

Cross-Reference

Only one dataset carries it. One of the three reference datasets we check against carries this event; the others do not list it. That is not a contradiction — the datasets cover different periods and use different thresholds — but it means the record has had less outside corroboration.
