The dataset records an event coded as an attempted military coup in Cote d'Ivoire on 18 September 2000 against General Robert Guei, the junta leader who had himself seized power in the country's first ever coup, in December 1999, overthrowing President Henri Konan Bedie. Guei's military government was unstable and increasingly unpopular, riven by rivalries within the armed forces and struggling to manage a country sliding toward the ethnic and religious polarization that would soon tear it apart. In September 2000 a coup attempt or armed mutiny against Guei was mounted, reportedly by soldiers or factions within the military opposed to his rule, and it was suppressed, with Guei blaming and cracking down on suspected plotters.
