Egypt, 1952 — military coup
Event Summary
In July 1952 the Free Officers, led by Gamal Abdel Nasser, overthrew the regime of King Farouk and forced him to abdicate. On 23 July infantry units seized general headquarters and blocked the roads into Cairo; Farouk abdicated in favour of his infant son on 26 July and sailed for Italy. The monarchy was abolished and Egypt declared a republic on 18 June 1953, with Muhammad Naguib as president.
