Ethiopia, 1989 — military coup attempt
Event Summary
On 16 May 1989 senior Ethiopian military officers launched the most serious coup attempt of Mengistu Haile Mariam's rule, striking while the Marxist dictator was away on a four day state visit to East Germany. The plotters, a group of generals frustrated by the ruinous, unwinnable civil wars against Eritrean and Tigrayan rebels, by Mengistu's autocratic brutality, and by the collapsing morale of an army bled white in the north, aimed to seize power, form a transitional military government, and negotiate an end to the wars. They deployed troops and tanks around key ministries in Addis Ababa, but the revolt faltered at the outset when the defense minister, Major General Haile Giyorgis Habte Mariam, refused to join and was shot dead, alerting loyalists.
Mengistu rushed home within twenty four hours, and loyal forces crushed the rising. The army chief of staff and air force commander were among the officers killed in the fighting, and a dozen more generals were executed in 1990. Mengistu survived, but his regime, drained and isolated, collapsed to the advancing rebels in 1991.
