Honduras, 2009 — military coup
Event Summary
On 28 June 2009 the Honduran Army ousted President Manuel Zelaya: soldiers stormed the presidential residence in Tegucigalpa early that morning, disarmed the presidential guard, and put Zelaya on a plane to Costa Rica. The Congress then voted to remove him and appointed its head, Roberto Micheletti, to complete the term. The trigger was Zelaya's attempt to hold a non-binding poll on convening a constituent assembly, which the Supreme Court had ordered him to cease.
