This entry is coded 19 December 1969, during the consolidation of General Suharto's New Order in Indonesia. Suharto had risen to power after the abortive 30 September 1965 movement, the ensuing anti-communist mass killings of 1965 to 1966 that destroyed the Indonesian Communist Party, and the gradual sidelining of President Sukarno, who was stripped of power in 1967 and lived under house arrest. By 1969 the New Order was firmly entrenched and vigilant against residual opposition: mass detention of alleged communists continued, with roughly 10,000 people held without trial on Buru Island from 1969, and in that year the army staged the controversial Act of Free Choice plebiscite in West Papua while Muslim dissidents with Darul Islam ties formed an alliance against the New Order.
