Event Summary
On 12 October 1999 army commanders seized control of the civilian government of the elected Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and placed him and his administration under house arrest. The trigger was Sharif's attempt to dismiss army chief General Pervez Musharraf while Musharraf was aboard a returning flight; Musharraf's allies took control of key institutions within hours. Musharraf, acting as Chief Executive, suspended the constitution.
