Event Summary
On 4 October 1990 the last coup attempt against Philippine President Corazon Aquino was mounted when mutinying soldiers under Colonel Alexander Noble staged a dawn seizure of military bases in Mindanao, in the far south of the country. Noble, an officer who had earlier been linked to the December 1989 coup attempt and had escaped detention, led rebels who took over a base and declared the establishment of a breakaway federal republic of Mindanao, seeking to exploit regional grievances against the Manila government. The rebellion, coming after the long series of revolts that had plagued Aquino's presidency since 1986, failed to ignite the wider uprising its leaders hoped for.
Government forces loyal to Aquino moved against the mutineers, and the seizure lasted about two days before Brigadier General Danilo Lim and around twenty one others capitulated on 6 October. Aquino survived this final challenge and served out the remainder of her term, handing power in 1992 to her loyal defense chief General Fidel Ramos, whose repeated defense of her government had made him the decisive figure in Philippine politics.
