Philippines, 2003 — military coup conspiracy
Event Summary
This entry is coded 27 July 2003, corresponding to the Oakwood mutiny in the Philippines. On 27 July 2003 about 300 armed junior officers and enlisted personnel from the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police, calling themselves the Magdalo group and led by Navy Lieutenant Antonio Trillanes IV and Army Captain Gerardo Gambala, seized and occupied the Oakwood Premier serviced apartments in Makati City, planting explosives and demanding the resignation of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes, and other officials over corruption in the military. They held the complex for about 20 hours before surrendering after negotiations, during which Arroyo declared a state of rebellion and gave the mutineers a deadline to stand down.
The post-mortem Feliciano Commission concluded in October 2003 that the mutiny was a well-planned power grab rather than a spontaneous protest, part of a broader plot to install a 15-member council and linked to opposition figures. The participants were charged with coup d'etat. The 27 July 2003 coding matches the Oakwood mutiny exactly.

Cross-Reference
Only one dataset carries it. One of the three reference datasets we check against carries this event; the others do not list it. That is not a contradiction — the datasets cover different periods and use different thresholds — but it means the record has had less outside corroboration.

Outcome and Target
Coup Atlas research identifies the target as: Arroyo declared a state of rebellion and the mutiny collapsed within about 20 hours.
Baseline coding: Plot discovered and disrupted before execution. Recorded leader fate: remained in office; not physically harmed. The baseline file does not name individual targets; researched names are kept in a separate layer.
