This entry is coded 13 January 1970, in the period when President Gaafar Nimeiry's Revolutionary Command Council was moving toward open confrontation with its most dangerous domestic opponent, the Ansar sect and its Umma Party. After Nimeiry's May 1969 coup and the subsequent nationalizations and alliance with the Communists, the Ansar leader Imam al-Hadi al-Mahdi had withdrawn to his Aba Island stronghold in the Nile, demanding a return to democratic government, the exclusion of communists from power, and an end to RCC rule. In November 1969 a cabinet crisis had already reshuffled the government, with Nimeiry taking the premiership.
