Event Summary
On 27 May 1960 a military coup overthrew the government of Turkish Prime Minister Adnan Menderes. Menderes and hundreds of Democrat Party leaders were arrested; after a trial lasting 11 months on charges including corruption, Menderes was sentenced to death and, following a suicide attempt, was hanged.
