Zambia, 1980 — military coup conspiracy
Event Summary
This entry is coded 16 October 1980, the day Zambian security forces thwarted an attempted coup against President Kenneth Kaunda, which he announced publicly on 27 October. The plot, originally planned for 17 October, was hatched by a small group of Zambian professionals together with Congolese and Katangese dissidents, amid growing unpopularity of Kaunda's government during economic hardship. Kaunda alleged the coup was sponsored by apartheid South Africa and used Zairean mercenaries, a claim Western intelligence services disputed.
Key figures included former Bank of Zambia governor Valentine Musakanya, the prominent lawyer Edward Shamwana, who was on the verge of appointment as Chief Justice and was expected to lead the interim government, the white lawyer Pierce Annfield, Katangese militia leader Deogratias Symba, and the recently sworn-in air force commander Major General Christopher Kabwe. At least fifty people were arrested. Seven of the accused were found guilty in January 1983 and sentenced to death, later pardoned by Kaunda in 1990.
