Benin, 1977 — dissident coup attempt
Event Summary
On 16 to 17 January 1977 a team of French led mercenaries under the veteran soldier of fortune Bob Denard, code named Operation Crevette or Operation Shrimp, mounted a failed coup against the Marxist government of President Mathieu Kerekou in Benin. Contracted by exiled Beninese political rivals and backed, according to the evidence Denard left behind, by regional leaders allied to France including the rulers of Togo, Ivory Coast, Gabon, and Morocco, the roughly ninety-strong force landed a DC-7 aircraft at Cotonou airport at dawn, seized the airfield, and shelled the presidential palace. But the operation collapsed.
Kerekou was not in the palace, which the mercenaries bombarded while empty, and a contingent of North Korean soldiers guarding a visiting delegation counterattacked and pinned the raiders down. Within hours Denard's men retreated to their aircraft and flew out, abandoning weapons and documents that exposed the plot's foreign backers. Kerekou, who rallied the nation by radio, survived, and the fiasco damaged Denard's reputation while the incident was raised at the United Nations.
