Event Summary
The dataset records an attempted military coup in the Republic of the Congo, or Congo Brazzaville, on 23 March 1970, during the early rule of President Marien Ngouabi, who had taken power in 1968 and in December 1969 proclaimed the Marxist Leninist People's Republic of the Congo under his Congolese Party of Labour. This event is generally identified with the abortive rising led by Lieutenant Pierre Kikanga, a dissident officer who mounted a coup attempt against Ngouabi's radical one-party regime. The attempt was suppressed and Kikanga killed.
Ngouabi's consolidation of a doctrinaire socialist state amid rivalries within the army and party produced recurrent plotting, and this rising was one of several challenges he weathered. Ngouabi remained in power until he was assassinated in March 1977, one of the succession of violent power struggles that marked the politics of Congo Brazzaville.
