Democratic Republic of the Congo, 1963 — dissident coup conspiracy

Democratic Republic of the Congo (COD)Central Africa, AfricaNovember 19, 1963

Event Summary

In November 1963 members of the newly formed Conseil National de Liberation organized a coup d'etat attempt against the government of Prime Minister Cyrille Adoula in Congo-Leopoldville. The CNL, a coalition of dissident Lumumbists and other nationalists, had been founded in Brazzaville in early October 1963 after President Joseph Kasa-Vubu dissolved parliament on 29 September to silence the nationalist opposition, and it aimed to overthrow the Leopoldville government through armed revolution. During the November coup attempt, two of the most powerful figures of the pro-Western Binza group, army commander Joseph-Desire Mobutu and Surete Nationale director Victor Nendaka Bika, barely escaped with their lives.

Kasa-Vubu issued a martial law decree that same month. The abortive coup was followed by the wider Kwilu and Simba rebellions of 1963 to 1965, which briefly conquered much of the eastern Congo before being pushed back by government forces and foreign mercenaries.

Editorial Note

Coded 19 Nov 1963 aligns with the November 1963 CNL coup attempt and the Kasavubu martial law decree of that month. Verified as a discrete attempt, though the precise day is given more specifically in the dataset than in the located narrative sources.

Cross-Reference

Only one dataset carries it. One of the three reference datasets we check against carries this event; the others do not list it. That is not a contradiction — the datasets cover different periods and use different thresholds — but it means the record has had less outside corroboration.
