Event Summary

On 3 February 1977 Lieutenant Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam carried out a bloody internal strike within Ethiopia's ruling military junta, the Derg, eliminating the rival faction that had tried to curb his power and seizing supreme control of the state. Since the 1974 revolution that deposed Emperor Haile Selassie, the Derg had been riven by lethal power struggles, and a December 1976 restructuring had limited Mengistu's authority. Conspiring with his ally Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Asfaw, Mengistu had the head of state and Derg chairman Brigadier General Tafari Bante and several other council members arrested during a meeting at the Grand Palace, and in an ensuing shootout Tafari Bante and six or more senior officers were killed.

Radio Ethiopia announced their execution, and Mengistu, who survived unharmed, emerged as undisputed chairman and ruler. He then unleashed the Red Terror, the campaign of mass killing against the civilian left and rival Marxists in which tens of thousands died. Mengistu ruled Ethiopia until he was overthrown and fled into exile in 1991.
