Event Summary
This entry is coded 1 March 1965, during the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation, known as Konfrontasi, in which President Sukarno of Indonesia sought to destabilize and break up the newly formed Federation of Malaysia. Sukarno, who condemned Malaysia as a British neo-colonial creation, launched the Ganyang Malaysia (Crush Malaysia) campaign in 1963 and pursued not only cross-border military incursions in Borneo but also covert subversion, sabotage and bombings on the Malay Peninsula and in Singapore, then part of Malaysia, aimed at undermining the federation from within. This campaign of Indonesian-backed subversion against the Malaysian state peaked in early 1965; the MacDonald House bombing in Singapore, which killed three, occurred on 10 March 1965, days after this coded date.
The Confrontation wound down after the failed 30 September 1965 coup in Indonesia and Sukarno's loss of power to General Suharto, and a peace treaty was signed on 11 August 1966.
