Philippines, 1990 — dissident coup attempt

Philippines (PHL)Southeast Asia, AsiaMarch 4, 1990

Event Summary

The dataset records an event coded as an attempted dissident coup in the Philippines on 4 March 1990 against President Corazon Aquino, part of the aftermath and continuation of the failed December 1989 coup. In this incident the suspended Cagayan provincial governor Rodolfo Aguinaldo, a former military officer implicated in the December 1989 rebellion, along with around two hundred of his armed men, seized the Hotel Delfino in the provincial capital of Tuguegarao in northern Luzon and took hostages, in an act of defiance against the government's moves to arrest him for his role in the coup. Government forces moved to end the standoff, and in the ensuing gunfight Brigadier General Oscar Florendo, sent to negotiate, and twelve others were killed, while Aguinaldo was slightly wounded before fleeing into the mountains to continue as a fugitive rebel.

The episode was one of the trailing convulsions of the long series of military revolts that had plagued Aquino's presidency since 1986. She survived this as she had the others, and served out her term, handing power in 1992 to her defense chief General Fidel Ramos, whose loyalty had repeatedly saved her.

Editorial Note

Date match to the 4 March 1990 Hotel Delfino seizure by Rodolfo Aguinaldo. Dataset codes it a dissident coup with leader unharmed, accurate for Aquino. Documented via the Philippine coup attempts record; a trailing episode of the December 1989 coup. Seventh and final Philippines record of the Aquino era coup series in the run.

Cross-Reference

Only one dataset carries it. One of the three reference datasets we check against carries this event; the others do not list it. That is not a contradiction — the datasets cover different periods and use different thresholds — but it means the record has had less outside corroboration.
