Event Summary
This entry is coded 16 November 1979, during a period of plotting against President France-Albert Rene of the Seychelles. Rene had seized power in the June 1977 coup against James Mancham and established a socialist one-party state, pursuing nonalignment and drawing away from South Africa. In 1979 a plot against his government was uncovered, resulting in the expulsion of several of the roughly 120 American civilians working at a USAF satellite tracking facility on the main island of Mahe; the US Ambassador to Kenya and the Charge d'Affaires in the Seychelles were implicated.
Later in 1979 Rene's party won elections and he pursued a socialist agenda that upset the small but influential middle class, and Seychellois exiles organized opposition groups such as the Seychelles Liberation Committee founded in 1979 in Paris. Rene frequently warned that sympathizers of the old government were conspiring to use mercenaries to stage a counter-coup, a threat that would materialize in the failed 1981 South African-backed mercenary landing.
