Seychelles, 1981 — dissident coup attempt
Event Summary
On 25 November 1981 the notorious mercenary Colonel Mike Hoare led a band of around forty three mercenaries, mostly South Africans and former Rhodesians, in a coup attempt in the Seychelles aimed at overthrowing the socialist president France Albert Rene and restoring the deposed pro-Western former president James Mancham. The mercenaries, backed covertly by South African intelligence, flew into the airport on Mahe disguised as members of a beer drinking club, the Ancient Order of Froth Blowers, with their weapons hidden in false-bottomed bags. The plot unraveled at customs when a security officer found an AK-47 in one man's luggage; a firefight erupted, and the mercenaries seized the airport but failed to take the island, as the promised local uprising never materialized and Rene rallied his forces.
Trapped, most of the mercenaries hijacked an Air India jetliner that had just landed and forced it to fly them to Durban, where they were arrested. Rene survived, and the affair exposed South African and alleged Kenyan involvement, deeply embarrassing the governments implicated.
