Sudan, 1970 — rebel coup attempt
Event Summary
In late March 1970 the military government of President Gaafar Nimeiri crushed the Ansar, the powerful Mahdist religious movement, in a bloody confrontation centered on their stronghold of Aba Island in the Nile. The Ansar and their political arm, the Umma Party, had opposed Nimeiri's leftist Free Officers regime since it seized power in 1969, and their leader Imam al-Hadi al-Mahdi had withdrawn to Aba Island demanding a return to democratic government. When hostile Ansar crowds prevented Nimeiri from visiting the island for talks in March 1970, fighting erupted between government forces and as many as 30,000 Ansar.
Army units with air support bombarded and stormed the island, and around 3,000 people were killed in the assault and the related Wad Nubawi clashes in Omdurman. Imam al-Hadi was killed while trying to flee across the border to Ethiopia. The massacre broke the Ansar as a political force and let Nimeiri consolidate power before he turned on his communist allies the following year.
