Syria, 1955 — military coup conspiracy

Syria (SYR)Western Asia, AsiaApril 22, 1955

Event Summary

On 22 April 1955, Colonel Adnan al-Malki, the deputy chief of staff of the Syrian Army and a leading Baathist and Arab-nationalist figure, was assassinated at a Damascus stadium by a military police sergeant linked to the pro-Western Syrian Social Nationalist Party. The killing triggered the Malki Affair, one of the first major political crackdowns in modern Syrian history: the SSNP was outlawed, thousands of its members were arrested, and military tribunals held from August to December 1955 convicted SSNP members of complicity in the murder and of conspiring with the United States to install a pro-Western government and align Syria with the Iraqi-Turkish Baghdad Pact. The investigation, led by Colonel Abdel Hamid Sarraj, framed the affair as a US-backed SSNP conspiracy against the Syrian state.

The Malki Affair weakened Syria's conservatives, elevated the leftist Baathist and communist bloc, and turned Syria sharply toward the anti-Western, pro-Soviet orientation of the later 1950s.

Editorial Note

Exact date match: Malki was assassinated on 22 April 1955, and the SSNP conspiracy affair (alleged US-backed plot) matches the dataset's military, dissident, foreign-backed coding. Well documented. First Syria record tied to a discrete dated conspiracy in the dataset run.

Cross-Reference

Only one dataset carries it. One of the three reference datasets we check against carries this event; the others do not list it. That is not a contradiction — the datasets cover different periods and use different thresholds — but it means the record has had less outside corroboration.
