Belarus, 2021 — dissident coup conspiracy
Event Summary
This entry is coded 5 July 2021, within the window of an alleged 2021 plot to assassinate President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus and stage an armed coup. The affair became public on 17 April 2021, when Russia's Federal Security Service and the Belarusian KGB announced they had jointly foiled a plot to kill Lukashenko and his sons and stage a rebellion. Two men had been detained in Moscow on 11 April: the US-Belarusian lawyer Yuri Zyankovich and the political scientist and writer Alexander Feduta, who had been Lukashenko's spokesman when he was first elected in 1994 before joining the opposition.
The KGB said the plotters, under the codename Silence, planned to seize power by force, and Belarusian state television dated the intended action to June or July 2021. The evidence shown was a Zoom conference of Lukashenko opponents and a Moscow restaurant meeting with alleged, blurred-faced army officers; participants said it was merely an online discussion club, and analysts described the affair as a likely KGB provocation. In September 2022 five people were jailed, including Zyankovich and Feduta.
The 5 July 2021 coding sits in the alleged June to July action window.

Cross-Reference
Only one dataset carries it. One of the three reference datasets we check against carries this event; the others do not list it. That is not a contradiction — the datasets cover different periods and use different thresholds — but it means the record has had less outside corroboration.
