Hungary, 1949 — dissident coup conspiracy

Hungary (HUN)Eastern Europe, EuropeJune 16, 1949

Event Summary

The dataset records an event coded as a dissident coup conspiracy in Hungary on 16 June 1949, during the affair that became the Laszlo Rajk show trial, the first great Stalinist purge trial in the Soviet bloc. Rajk, a former interior and foreign minister and Politburo member of the Hungarian Workers' Party, was arrested on 30 May 1949 on the orders of party leader Matyas Rakosi, who saw the popular Rajk as his most dangerous rival. Through June 1949 the State Protection Authority, guided by Soviet advisors, extracted confessions to a fabricated Titoist conspiracy in which Rajk and his alleged accomplices, including General Gyorgy Palffy, were said to have plotted with Yugoslav agents to assassinate Rakosi, Farkas, and Gero and seize power with Yugoslav military help.

Rajk and his co-defendants were tried in September 1949, convicted, and Rajk was executed on 15 October 1949. The affair, though built on fabricated charges, was the model discovered conspiracy of the early Cold War purges and was used to consolidate Rakosi's Stalinist control.

Editorial Note

Dataset date 16 June 1949 falls between Rajk's arrest on 30 May 1949 and the September 1949 show trial, during the active investigation of the fabricated Titoist conspiracy. Well documented as a discovered/alleged conspiracy in the CSP sense. Pairs with the Hungary 1946-12-31 record from batch 1.

Cross-Reference

Only one dataset carries it. One of the three reference datasets we check against carries this event; the others do not list it. That is not a contradiction — the datasets cover different periods and use different thresholds — but it means the record has had less outside corroboration.
